Ruth E. Carter selected my garment to wear at the 2023 Costume Designer Guilds Award. My inspiration was Ruth E. Carter and her amazing work in this industry. Researching and discovering her love for history and cultural significance when it comes to Afrofuture I wanted to combined historical reference from the Harlem Renaissance in particular Josephine Baker and her vibrancy and celebration for black life and art during the time but also incorporating traditional East African silhouettes such as the “Kitenge.”
